What we do for Dodd Group Ltd.
We have worked with Dodd Group to support their site-specific training, increase worker retention, and supply labour.
Our first project with Dodd Group was the Pittville Campus student accommodation. After the success of this initial project, we met with the site team to discuss the requirements for a new project on Glossop Road. From this discussion, it was clear that training and retention of labour were going to be incredibly important for this prestigious project.
In order to encourage labour retention, we proposed a 3 monthly rate incentive increase of £0.25 per hour, linked to time keeping and performance. By the 9th month of the project, worker rates increased to an extra £1.00 per hour. Through this incentive, we were successfully able to retain 95% of the workforce from start to finish.
It was essential for all operatives to undertake additional training prior to beginning work on-site. Training included: asbestos awareness, manual handling, working at heights and some IPAF. We organised and delivered all training, as well as provided a profile and CSCS cards for all workers.
We created an on-site training folder that was updated weekly and was accessible for all site teams and our operatives. We now have this in place for every project carried out with Dodd Group as a minimum standard. Early engagement allows us to provide essential training, adding additional value to our clients.
Why Dodd Group Chose Us
“We have recently delivered a large student accommodation scheme in Cardiff with a very tight construction programme, which required high levels of skilled M&E resource on a complex sequence of work. P.I.E.R were able to support our needs throughout the period of construction by working collaboratively with us prior to commencement on-site. We were able to sit down and discuss our initial resource needs, working time scales, labour expectations and payment fees to establish a mutual understanding going forward for the period of the scheme. We were pleased with the outcome overall and Pier were found to be adaptable and flexible at stages that were important to the client’s scheme. They also encouraged a feeling of togetherness for their employees, which was demonstrated several times, one example of which was calling to site and providing all of their operatives with Easter Eggs as a small gesture of their efforts. The paperwork information and record keeping was also very good and the quality of operatives in most parts was above average, which reflects in our working ethos and ultimately aided the delivery of a quality project. We look forward to working with P.I.E.R on the next schemes.”

“P.I.E.R are currently servicing our project within Cardiff with an average of 35 personnel. The labour which is sent to site are vetted prior, proposed to site management, and then if agreed, the operatives are enrolled onto specific site specialist courses before arriving at work. The organisation from Pier to make this happen is exceptional.”

The job has a £8 million M&E value with a total build value of approx. £40m. Ourselves and Pier worked closely with initial meetings to discuss the correct rates considering the duration and scope of the project. Once this was agreed Pier did not hesitate to start resourcing the appropriate labour for the difficult task ahead! As a company standard we require mandatory training prior to any form of employment and Pier took it upon themselves to make sure all their labour supplied was trained prior to attending site. Pier went above and beyond with this and kept a bespoke labour file located on site up to date with relevant trade and training qualifications.”
